Ø History of Washim district | |
Ø Washim district was formerly known as Vatsagulma. Washim city was the capital of the Vakataka kingdom. The Vakataka kingdom ruled from the 30th century to the 6th century. This kingdom stretched from Madhya Pradesh to Berar. It was up to Andhra Pradesh. Vindhya-Sakti was the first king of Vakataka. This king Sarvasena had declared Vatsagulma (Vashim) as his capital. His two books Harivijaya and Gathasaptashadi are famous. There is evidence that the caves at Ajanta were encouraged by the Vakataka kingdom. | |
Ø The district was established on 01 July 1998. Washim district was formed by the division of Akola district. | |
Ø Washim district is bordered by Yavatmal to the east , Akola to the north , Amravati to the northeast , Buldhana to the west and Hingoli to the south. | |
