Washim city was the capital of the Vakataka kingdom. The Vakataka kings ruled from the 30th century to the 6th century. This kingdom extended from Madhya Pradesh to Berar and Andhra Pradesh. Vindhya-Shakti was the first king of Vakataka. King Sarvasena declared Vatsagulma (Vashim) as the capital. His two books Harivijaya and Gatha Saptashadi are famous. There are evidences that the caves at Ajanta were encouraged by the Vakataka king himself. Also, the earlier name of Washim district was Vatsagulma.
